Five Precautions for Brushless DC Motor

ReleaseTime: 2023-12-11

Everyone must have encountered many cases of motor burnout, some due to mechanical problems, some due to thermal relay problems, and some due to phase loss. So how to avoid brushless DC motors from being burned?

1. Keep the brushless DC motor clean. During the operation of the motor, there should be no dust, water stains, or debris within 3 meters of the air inlet. Otherwise, once sucked into the motor, it will form a short circuit medium or damage the insulation layer of the wire, causing a short circuit between the boxes and burning the motor. So, to ensure the safe operation of the motor, it is necessary to keep the motor and its surrounding environment clean, so that the motor can maintain a safe and stable working state during long-term operation.

2. Ensure that brushless DC motors frequently operate at rated current

The main reason for the overload operation of the electric motor is due to the excessive load being dragged, low voltage, or mechanical jamming caused by being driven. If the overload time is too long, the motor will absorb a large amount of active power from the power grid, the current will rapidly increase, and the temperature will also rise, which can easily cause the motor to burn out. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the motor frequently operates at the rated current, and also pay attention to checking the operation of the transmission device, the concentricity of the coupling, and gear transmission.

3. Pay attention to checking the temperature of brushless DC motors. The staff should regularly check the temperature of the bearings, stator, casing, and other parts of the motor, especially for motors without voltage, current, and frequency monitoring or overload protection. They should pay more attention to monitoring the temperature rise. If a high temperature rise is found, the machine should be stopped immediately for inspection. In addition, the rolling elements, raceway surfaces, bearing clearances, and so on of the bearings need to be regularly inspected. In case of any abnormalities, the bearings must be updated before operation.

4. Observe whether the brushless DC motor has vibration, noise, and abnormal odor. If the motor vibrates, the different center of gravity of the connected load will also increase, increasing the motor load. Overloading operation will burn out the motor. Noise and odors are precursors to motor malfunctions and must be monitored at all times. Therefore, during the operation of electric motors, especially high-power maintenance network electric motors, it is necessary to check regularly to see if there is any looseness in the motor end cover, anchor bolts, bearing covers, etc. Once problems are found, they should be solved in a timely manner.

5. Ensure the normal operation of the starting equipment. Generally speaking, the quality of the starting equipment determines whether the brushless DC motor can start normally. Based on past experience, most burnt out motors are caused by abnormal operation of the starting equipment, such as phase loss starting of the starting equipment, arcing of the contactor contacts, ignition, etc. So how to maintain the startup device? Mainly for cleaning and fastening, for example, if the contact points of the contactor are not clean, it will increase the contact resistance, causing the maintenance network to heat up and burn out the contacts, thereby burning out the motor. Therefore, it is necessary to always pay attention to the cleaning and fastening of the starting equipment. The electrical control cabinet should be located in a dry, ventilated, and easy to operate position, and regular dust removal should be carried out.
